A gilding plate is a preparation, generally colored, applied in a uniform layer and thin enough as the underside to receive gold or other sheet metals in the process of gilding in water, on wood or in illumination.
Charbonnel gilding plates come in the form of a clay paste very finely ground in the old-fashioned way on granite cylinders.
These plates for gilding guarantee to the gilder a stable and perfectly homogeneous plate of high quality.
The gilding plate is mixed with twice its volume of a warm solution of rabbit skin glue, carefully spread over the object to be gilded.
Skin glue is essential to ensure the dilution and fixation of the plate to be browned.
